Every Child a Level 5 in English

Year 6

Term One - Children for whom a Level 3 is predicted.

In the second year of using the Literacy Suite, there will be very few, if any children in this category.

This group of children should focus on the library. Start with a Level 3 title and thereafter, let them use the library as they would any other library, choosing their own titles. They should complete two 'chapters' every day. They should be taught to work at the computers on their own without direct adult supervision. At some later point, they should read their prepared texts to an adult FROM THEIR READING FOLDERS - never from the computer screen. Pupils need only be taught to touch the spacebar to progress the word focus and then to touch any letter key to 'voice' the unfamiliar words. Some children for whom a Level 2 English is predicted may find this too challenging. Such children will have a quite specific learning disability and should instead complete a daily exercise from the less demanding but equally productive, Jumpstart course.

Term Two.

All children, including those for whom a Level 3 was predicted, should complete any two Reading Comprehension exercises each week, say Monday and Friday. The should complete any one Dictation exercise each week, say on Wednesday. Towards the end of these days, children should read their prepared comprehension or dictation texts to their own table group - not to an adult. The only exception to this regime should be those on the Jumpstart programme.

Term Three

The three day programme embracing Reading Comprehension and Dictation exercises should be kept up until at least the Key Stage 2 test. Most children will have completed some fifty quite linguistically demanding Reading Comprehension as well as twenty-five Dictation exercises.

Year 5.

Term one.

Vulnerable readers should complete a library session three times each week. At least thirty titles will be completed in this term. Any Year 5 child for whom the library exercises are too demanding, should complete instead, an exercise from the Jumpstart programme.

Terms Two and Three

All children should complete a library session, three times each week with all children reading their prepared texts to their table group. A TA should circulate among the table groups, not to intervene but simply to ensure that they remain focused on the task in hand.

Over the course of these two terms, pupils will complete some fifty titles.

Year Four.

Term One - vulnerable readers only.

All vulnerable readers should complete an exercise from the Jumpstart course. As soon as they have settled to the course, some children may be ready to complete two of the Jumpstart exercises each day.
